Registry-Lock is a status code that can be set on an Internet domain name in the registry at the request of the sponsoring registrar of the domain name. This is usually done in order to prevent unauthorized, unwanted or accidental changes to the domain based on the standard access credentials in the registration channel.
So long as the registry lock flag is set, the registry prohibits the modification of the domain, including:
- Transferring of the domain;
- Deletion of the domain;
- Substitution of domain contact handles (but not the change of data associated with those handles); and
- Substitution of the domain’s host objects (i.e., name servers).
Renewal of the domain name is, however, still possible when Registry Lock is set, in particular the auto-renew will continue working.
Registry-Lock flag is internal, and only shows to third parties in Whois/RDAP as the following 3 statuses (cumulatively): serverDeleteProhibited, serverTransferProhibited and serverUpdateProhibited
